Parent Bible Teaching Tips for February
Use the conversation starters and activities below as you teach your child the Bible truths for this month. Go to facebook.com/lifetruths and click on the “join my list” link in the left column for a weekly e-mail with additional Bible teaching suggestions.
February 5 “The People Worshiped God” 2 Chronicles 3:1-17; 5:1-14
Bible Verse: The people praised and thanked God. 2 Chronicles 5:13
Life Application: I can worship God at church.
Conversation Starter: At bedtime, look at the Bible story on the Kindergarten Connection weekly page. Tell the story to your child. Remark: “In this story the people worshiped God. Where is one place we can worship God?” (church)
February 12 “A Woman Gave an Offering” Mark 12:41-44
Bible Verse: Bring an offering to church. Malachi 3:10
Life Application: I can give an offering at church.
Conversation Starter: If your child receives an allowance, talk to her/him about setting aside a portion of the allowance to give as an offering at church. For example, if she gets $1.00 allowance a week, suggest she set aside 10 cents to give as an offering at church. Review the Bible story with your child. Help your child understand one way we can worship God is by bringing an offering to church. Help your child remember to bring her weekly offering to church on Sunday. Review the Bible verse together.
February 19 “The Church Chose Helpers” Acts 6:1-7
Bible Verse: People at church helped each other. Acts 2:45
Life Application: I can know people at church help one another.
Conversation Starter: Take a few minutes to review the church bulletin or church newsletter. Find examples of events that show people at church helping each other. Talk about several of these events with your child. Review the Bible verse and Bible story while driving in the car this week. By the end of the week, you should be able to start the verse or Bible story and your child should be able to finish it.
February 26 “Apollos Learned About Jesus” Acts 18:1-4,11,18-19,24-28
Bible Verse: People at church taught and told others about Jesus. Acts 5:42
Life Application: I can know people at church learn about God and Jesus.
Conversation Starter: Take time this week to review the Bible story and Bible verse. As you walk to your child’s Sunday School class on Sunday, point to rooms along the way. Ask: “Do you think people will learn about God and Jesus in this room today?” Repeat with several rooms to help your child understand that people at church learn about God and Jesus.
1st-5th GRADES
During February, people often think of hearts and flowers, but this February your child will hear more about temples and crowns as he learns about three Bible times kings and the prophet who came before them.
Your child will discover that the boy Samuel learned to listen to and talk to God. Later, the adult Samuel anointed first Saul and then David as king. The story of Saul demonstrates what happens when a person chooses to go his own way rather than following God’s plan. King David’s story shows just the opposite. As a man after God’s own heart, David shows children and adults how to use one’s God-given abilities and talents to serve God. David’s son Solomon became king as David neared the end of his life. King Solomon asked for God to make him wise. God honored that prayer as Solomon became the wisest man who had ever lived.
As your child studies these Bible stories, he will learn that he can pray, that he can know and follow God’s plan for his life, that he can use his abilities and talents to serve God, and that he can ask God to help him make wise choices.
These memory verses will help your child remember what he has learned about his relationship to God:
Week of February 5 I call on You, God, because You will answer me. Psalm 17:6
Week of February 12 I know the plans I have for you. Jeremiah 29:11
Week of February 19 Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.
Psalm 100:2
Week of February 26 For the Lord gives wisdom. Proverbs 2:6
You can help these concepts become more real to your child. Pray with your child in different situations. Pray often. Point out to your child that God’s plan right now is for him to do his best in school, to obey his parents, and to become a Christian when the time is right. Call attention to things your child does well. Talk with him about ways he might use those abilities to serve God by helping others. Give your child choices when possible. Talk with him about the consequences of the different choices he might make. Praise him when he makes good choices. Love him and guide him when he makes unwise choices.
Thank you for the privilege of teaching your child about God, His love, and what the Bible says about Him. Please call if we can be of any help to you in any way.
