Scripture: 1 John 1:5-10

Big Idea: Confession clears the way for communion with God

  1. Reject False Fellowship

1 John 1:5-6 “God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”

To walk in the light is to live in the life that God offers through Christ, while to walk in darkness is to live in sin, separated from God.

Ephesians 5:8 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

Colossians 1:13-14 “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

When God saves us, He doesn’t leave us in the darkness; He transforms us and moves us into His kingdom of light.

  1. Affirm Genuine Fellowship

1 John 1:7-8 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

When we walk in the light as Christ is in the light, it’s a clear sign that we belong to Him.

Galatians 5:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Walking in the light is the same as walking by the Spirit because both involve living in a way that reflects God’s holiness and depending on His strength, not our own.

  1. Confession Enhances Fellowship

1 John 1:9-10 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”

We don’t confess our sins to receive new forgiveness; rather, we confess to restore the closeness of our relationship with Him.

As Christians, we live in a state of ongoing repentance, which means we continually turn away from sin and align our hearts with God’s will.

Here’s how we can apply this truth in our daily lives:

  1. Live in Constant Repentance:
  2. Embrace Christ’s Complete Forgiveness:
  3. Thank God for His Faithfulness:
